F A Albin & Sons, and our funeral homes, have a rich and varied history. The company was born 200 years ago in Snowfield, Bermondsey. Our ancestors, who had until then acted as wardens of a local cemetery, used their experience in constructing coffins and organising burials to quickly build a reputation as the Bermondsey area’s most reputable provider of dignified, bespoke funerals.
While we now cover a much wider area and have multiple funeral parlours which welcome clients from Lewisham, Bexley, Sydenham, Bromley and the wider London and South East areas, we’re somewhat proud to be funeral directors with very humble beginnings.
A Golden Era
By the 1950s, our firm was using a fleet of motorised funeral vehicles, one of which we still use for funerals to this day. The firm moved to new premises on South East London’s Culling Road in 1974, when Fred Albin was still at the helm. 12 years later, Barry Albin took over the business, overseeing the opening of a string of funeral parlours across Kent and London.
Barry became well-known for being one of the most respected funeral directors locally and in the surrounding Lewisham, Bexley, Sydenham, Bromley areas. This owed much to his professionalism, approachability and understanding nature.
We lost Barry in 2015 to a brain tumour, which was diagnosed in 2013. He lived a full life, having transformed F A Albin & Sons into a thriving operation, written three volumes of memoirs and served as president of the International Funeral Director’s Association.
Barry Albin was appointed an OBE in 2010 for his work repatriating the deceased. Alongside this prestigious honour, he was made a deputy lieutenant for Greater London in 2012 due to his lifelong commitment to the Bermondsey community. In the same year, he received the Lifetime Achievement award at the Good Funeral Awards.
Carrying the Torch
Following Barry’s passing, F A Albin & Sons is determined to preserve his legacy and continue the family tradition of providing unrivalled care and consideration for local communities and clients alike. The clientele at our funeral parlours, and the feedback we receive from them, make it clear we’re doing something right in our role as funeral directors. We currently have a total of 7 funeral homes.
We are proud to be associated with a number of local hospices, children’s charities and bereavement groups, including Child Bereavement UK, the AD Bermondsey and Rotherhithe Foundation, the Evelina Children’s Hospital Appeal and UK Homes 4 Heroes Pride and Passion.
Considering our humble beginnings, we think our ancestors would be both surprised and proud to learn that our funeral directors now cover Lewisham, Bexley, Sydenham, Bromley and the wider London and Kent areas. Forging ahead, we are dedicated to providing beautiful, bespoke funerals to bereaved families.
